Morocco faced a significant blow during their Round of 16 match against Canada in the 2026 World Cup, as forward Ismail Sabiri sustained an injury that forced him to leave the pitch early.

Sabiri injured his right hamstring in the 22nd minute after feeling pain during a quick sprint and an attempt to control the ball, making it impossible for him to continue the match due to this injury.

Head coach Mohamed Wahbi was compelled to make an early substitution, bringing on Sofiane Rahimi in place of Sabiri, who exited the field affected by the injury.

According to injury specialist Thamer Al-Shahrani, recovery time varies depending on the nature of the injury. The player could be sidelined for five days if it is merely a muscle strain, while the absence could extend to 10 to 14 days in the case of a grade one tear.

Al-Shahrani added that the worst-case scenario involves a grade two tear or worse, which could necessitate a recovery period of up to six weeks, potentially jeopardizing Sabiri's continued participation with the Moroccan national team in the remaining matches of the 2026 World Cup.

It is worth noting that Morocco advanced to the quarterfinals at the expense of the Canadian team.
