Belgium and Aston Villa have been dealt a heavy blow as midfielder Amadou Onana has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his knee, which will keep him out for 7 to 8 months, according to The Athletic.

Onana sustained the injury during Belgium's Round of 16 match against the United States in the 2026 World Cup, having to leave the pitch early in the 21st minute. He was later seen using crutches and wearing a knee brace, with tests confirming the worst fears.

This means the Belgian midfielder's World Cup journey is over, and he will also miss the start of the new season with Aston Villa, a significant loss for coach Unai Emery who relied on him as a key figure in midfield alongside Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara.

Onana is expected to begin a lengthy rehabilitation program following surgery, while Aston Villa will have to cope with his absence in the coming months as the Belgian national team prepares to face Spain in the World Cup quarter-finals.
