England face a major setback after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, as midfielder Jordan Henderson has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to an injury sustained following the match against Mexico.

The Athletic reported that Henderson will undergo surgery to treat a wrist injury, meaning his journey with the England national team in this World Cup edition has come to an end.

The Brentford player suffered the injury in an unusual manner, slipping while attempting to climb the advertising boards during England's celebrations after their victory over Mexico at Estadio Azteca, falling awkwardly and injuring his wrist.

The source added that Henderson was carried off the field on a stretcher after receiving oxygen, before being taken to a hospital in Mexico City, and he did not travel with the England squad to their camp in Kansas City.

England secured their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Mexico 3-2 in the Round of 16, continuing their journey in the tournament.

The England national team is now preparing to face Norway in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
